Haribhakta Katuwal, an eminent figure in Nepali literature, was born on July 2, 1935, in the village of Bogibil, located in the Dibrugarh District of Assam, India. His ancestral roots traced back to Chainpur in the Sankhuwasava District, where his grandfather had migrated to Assam. Katuwal was the firstborn child of his parents, Bir Bahadur and Bishnu Maya. He received his primary education at Bogibil Primary School and completed his high school education at George High School in Dibrugarh. Despite financial constraints, he pursued further studies and passed his I.A. examination as a private student. However, due to the family's economic struggles, he had to discontinue his education and began teaching at A.O.C. School.

    From his early days, Katuwal displayed a multifaceted talent, showing interests in literature, music, sports, acting, and painting. Proficient in six languages - Nepali, Assamese, Bengali, Hindi, English, and Urdu - he exhibited exceptional linguistic prowess. However, despite his talents, Katuwal faced numerous challenges in his professional life. After losing his teaching job, he ventured into businesses like vegetable vending and running a hotel, but faced setbacks leading to unemployment.

    Under the pen name 'Prabasi,' Katuwal initially wrote poems, showcasing his extraordinary literary abilities. His exceptional talent caught the attention of King Mahendra, who invited him to Nepal to nurture his writing career. Relocating to Nepal in 1967, Katuwal continued his literary journey, abandoning the pen name 'Prabasi' and adopting his original name.

    In Nepal, Katuwal worked as an editor at the Royal Nepal Academy, marking the beginning of a new chapter in his life. Despite facing challenges and dismissals from various jobs, Katuwal persevered in his literary pursuits. He edited numerous literary magazines and authored several books, including collections of poems, songs, and plays. His literary works, characterized by profound themes and poignant expressions, earned him recognition and accolades, including the Royal Nepal Academy Medal and a gold medal for poetry.

    Despite his contributions to Nepali literature, Katuwal's life was marked by struggles and hardships. He faced financial difficulties, job instability, and societal challenges, ultimately leading to his return to Assam, where he passed away in 1980. However, his legacy lives on through his timeless literary creations, which continue to resonate with readers and listeners alike. In 2015, a documentary titled "Ani Hari Bhakta Farkiyenan" shed light on his life, while a play staged in 2017 paid homage to his poetry. In 2021, a life-size statue erected in Jaigaon near the Indo-Bhutan border stands as a testament to his enduring legacy.

    Haribhakta Katuwal's literary prowess transcends time and space, leaving an indelible mark on Nepali literature. His poems and songs, filled with profound insights and emotional depth, continue to inspire and resonate with audiences, affirming his position as a literary luminary of Nepal.

    आफैँलाई खोजिरहनुको उत्सुकताको पछि
    गुमाउँदै जानुको चिसो विवशताले
    पीडित मेरो मुटु
    खै आज कविता सोच्नै मान्दैन
    सायद त्यसैले होला सुनगाभा !
    तिम्रो मुस्कानभन्दा
    मेरो आँखामा यसबेला
    ती वृद्ध सज्जनको मलिन अनुहार खेलिरहेछ
    जो घन्टौँ एउटा लामो क्यूमा उभिएर पनि हिजो साँझ
    मट्टितेलको रित्तो भाँडो हल्लाउँदै
    घर फर्किरहेका थिए
    जाती हुन्थ्यो बरु
    म कवि नभएर
    त्यही रित्तो भाँडोभरि
    मट्टितेल हुन सकेको भए
    मेरो देशको एउटा घरमा
    एक रात
    एक छाक बल्न सक्थेँ
    एउटा वृद्धको खिन्न अनुहार
    केही क्षण उज्यालो पार्न सक्थेँ
    तर, सुनगाभा !
    मेरो देशको
    कुनै समस्या पनि टार्न नसक्ने
    म कवि भएँ
    जो तिम्रै मुस्कानमा मात्र अल्झिरह्यो ।

    न सम्झुँ भन्छु तिमीलाई

    न सम्झुँ भन्छु तिमीलाई
    नसम्झी बस्न के सक्थें?
    नहेरूँ भन्छु तिमीलाई
    नहेरी बस्न के सक्थें?

    कि तिम्रो सम्झना उस्तो
    कि मेरो छाती नै उस्तो
    कहालिन्छ जव छाती
    नधाई बस्न के सक्थें?

    खिइने छैन यो सृष्टि
    दुइ आँखाले हेर्दैमा
    फुलेको सृष्टिको फूल
    नसुँघी बस्न के सक्थें?

    छ तिम्रो सम्झना मीठो
    कमलो छाती छ मेरो
    जसै चस्कन्छ यो छाती
    नरोई बस्न के सक्थें?

    जति सम्झ्यो उति मीठो
    जता हेर्यो उतै सुन्दर
    यो सुन्दर सृष्टिको गीत
    नगाई बस्न के सक्थें?

    मर्न सकूँ तिम्रा लागि

    बल्ल आइपुगेको आमा ! तिम्रो न्यानो काख खोज्दै
    माया देऊ, मलाई मायाको भोक लागेको छ।
    हात चोपलेर पवित्र पानीमा वाग्मतीको
    तिमीलाई फेरि कहिल्यै नछोड्ने किरिया खाइसकेको छु।

    मुठ्ठीभर माटो लिएर पावन मातृभूमिको
    मेरा अपराधहरुको प्रायश्चित गर्न लागिरहेको छु
    यत्तिका दिनसम्म त्यसै भौतारिँदै हिँडे– वारिस विना
    केवल दाँत ङिच्याउँदै अरुको भुकाईमा–थुकाईमा।

    तर आमा! जहाँ थिएँ– तिम्रै छोरो थिएँ
    तिम्रै सौम्य अनुहार हुन्थ्यो मेरो यी आँखाभरि
    तिम्रै रगत प्रवाहित थियो मुटुभरि–कलेजोभरि
    तिम्रै गौरवगाथा व्याप्त थियो मेरो उत्साहभरि–उमङ्गभरि।

    बल्ल आमा ! तिमीलाई ‘आमा’ भन्न पाएको छु
    करोडौँ तिम्रा ओजस्वी सन्तानहरुका लाममा–
    आफूलाई उभ्याएर आकाशतिर दुईहात उचालिदिएको छु
    रहर कुँदिरहेको छु यी पाखुराहरुमा केही गर्न सकूँ तिम्रा लागि
    तिम्रो गौरव नै हाम्रो अस्तित्व आमा! मर्न सकूँ तिम्रा लागि।

    कतै आउला कि कुनै यस्तो दिन

    हिजो एक मित्रकहाँ गएको थिएँ,
    एउटा पोको कोठाको कुनामा,
    दलिनमा झुण्डिरहेको थियो
    ती- अब फेरि आउने जाडो छल्न सुरक्षित राखिएका
    सिरक र दोलाईँहरू हुनुपर्छ पक्कै पनि
    मलाई लाग्यो-
    म पनि झुण्ड्याइदिउँ एउटा ठूलो पोको पारेर
    व्यर्थै मलाई चिमोटिरहने यी सपनाहरूलाई,
    कतै आउला कि कुनै यस्तो दिन,
    जब, फुलाएर तिनै सपना आँखाहरूका फूलबारीमा
    हाम्रा छोरा-छोरी र नाति-नातिनाहरू
    आनन्दका गीत गाउँदै खेत गोडिरहेका हुनेछन्!

    दिनका तीन स्थिति: मेरो अनुभवमा

    गुँडगुँडला चरा बिच्काउँदै
    आँखा आँखाको नींद उडाउँदै
    भर्खर बैंस चढेकी ठिटी जस्तै
    भित्ताका प्वाल प्वालबाट चियाउन
    आइपुग्छ सधैं एउटा उत्ताउलो विहान ।

    बितेको बैंस सम्झेर – आउँदो बुढ्यौलीलाई पर्खेर
    आउने-जानेको मुख चहार्न बानी लागेको
    तीस-पैंतीसकी विधवा जस्तै,
    पट्टाइलाग्दो साँधमा पुगिसकेको
    थाप्लामा एउटा सूर्यको भारी
    खपिनसक्नु हुन्छ यो मध्यान्ह ।

    उज्यालोसित छलिंदै छलिंदै
    आँखा आँखासँग बास माग्दै
    रात आउँछ मकहाँ प्रेयसी बनेर,
    छातीभरि उखर्माउलो थपी
    केही पीर दिंदै – केही पीर लिंदै
    रात जान्छ मबाट सधैं
    एकै अँगालो नींद बास बसेर ।

    जीवन: एक दृष्टि

    घरि घरि हावा भरिरहनु पर्ने
    पङ्कचर भएको-
    बाइस्कलको ट्यूब जस्तो यो जीवन
    कति टिठलाग्दो छ !
    टाल्यो- उप्किन्छ
    उप्किन्छ- टाल्यो
    टाल्दा टाल्दै टाल्ने ठाउँ नै हराइसक्छ
    र पनि नटाली धर छैन
    नगुडी चक्कालाई सुख छैन !
    गुड्दा गुड्दै जब असंख्य भ्वाङ पर्छन्
    टाल्नै नसकिने- ट्युबमा
    अनि फेकिन्छ निर्दयतापूर्वक
    डष्टबिनमा वा कुनै नालीमा ।
    घरि घरि हावा भरिरहनु पर्ने
    पङ्कचर भएको-
    बाइस्कलको ट्यूव जस्तो यो जीवन
    कति टिठ्लाग्दो छ !!

    रहर

    बा, पाठशाला जान्नँ म
    इतिहास पढाइन्छ त्यहाँ मरेका दिनहरूको
    खिया लागेका कलका पुर्जाहरू जस्तै
    गणितका शुत्रहरू पनि साह्रै पुराना भइसके
    रहर छैन मलाई बाँचिदिने
    केवल इतिहास पानाहरूमा,
    मैले त बाँच्नुपर्छ आउने दिनहरूमा
    इतिहासको गतिलाई उछिनेर
    इतिहासभन्दा बढी अरु केही भएर
    त्यसैले बा, पाठशाला जान्नँ म
    इतिहास पढाइन्छ त्यहाँ मरेका दिनहरूको
    फ्रेम हालेर राख्ने आदर्शभन्दा
    भोग्न सकिने आदर्श मलाई राम्रो लाग्छ
    बनिसकेको बाटामा हिँड्नभन्दा
    बाटो बनाउँदै हिँड्न रहर लाग्छ।
    इतिहासका ठेली होइन
    एउटा कोदालो चाहिन्छ मेरो पाखुरालाई
    योजना होइन
    पैतालाले नाप्नु छ मैले प्रत्येक अग्ला टाकुरालाई
    र गर्नु छ भुक्तान जम्मै
    धरतीले बोकाएका ऋणहरूको
    बा, पाठशाला जान्नँ म
    इतिहास पढाइन्छ त्यहाँ मरेका दिनहरूको ।

    यो जिन्दगी खै के जिन्दगी !

    भित्रभित्र खोक्रिएर बाहिर बाहिर बाँचेको
    एटमको त्रासले चुसेको
    समस्याको भूतले सताएको
    यो जिन्दगी खै के जिन्दगी !

    बन्दुकको नालमा टाउको राखेर जिदाउनु पर्छ यहाँ
    खुकुरीको धारमा पाइताला टेकेर जिउनु पर्छ यहाँ
    आँखा चिम्लनु पनि जगजगी आँखा उर्घार्न पनि जगजगी
    यो जिन्दगी खै के जिन्दगी

    पसलमा सोकेशभित्र सजाएरराखेको
    काँचको चुरा जस्तो यो जिन्दगी
    कुनै युवतीको हातमा चढ्दाचढ्दै
    प्याट्ट फुट्न सक्छ यो जिन्दगी!
    रबरको सस्तो चप्पल जस्तै यो जिन्दगी!
    बाटामा हिँड्दाहिँड्दै
    च्याट्ट टुट्न सक्छ यो जिन्दगी!
    यो जिन्दगी खै के जिन्दगी!!

    भोलिको नेपाल a

    ती जो बिहानै काखीमा पुस्तकको ठेली च्यापेर
    हुलक हुल निस्किरहेछन् गल्ली-गल्लीबाट
    तिनलाई बाटो छोडिदेऊ !
    ती लहर जस्तै उर्लेर आएरहेछन् |
    यी घर - जसलाई हामी घर ठानिरहेका छौ
    यी सडक - जसलाई हामी सडक भनिरहेका छौ

    यी मन्दिर - जसलाई हामी मन्दिर सम्झिरहेका छौ
    यी केहि पनि प्रसस्त हुने छैनन् उनीहरुक लागि |
    ती त सपना बोकेर आएरहेछन - निर्माणक गीत गाउदै
    उनीहरुलाई छेक्न नखोज !
    आफुलाई चाहिने घर
    आफुलाई चाहिने सडक
    आफुलाई चाहिने मन्दिर
    उनीहरु आफै बनाउनेछन्
    निश्चित छ - भोलिको नेपाल उनीहरुले चाहे जस्तै हुनेछ |
