Motiram Bhatta was born on 20 Bhadra 1980
BS in Kathmandu, Nepal, to Daramam Bhatt and Repu Mardini Bhatt. During his
lifetime, he was in the position of a character of great importance to shape
Nepalee culture, literature, and society. He got his early education from
Durbar High School, Kathmandu. Further, he went for higher studies to Banaras,
India. During his stay in Banaras, he studied Persian and Urdu.
In 1944, Motiram returned to Nepal and
continued high school in Sanskrit and English. He completed his proficiency
certificate from Calcutta in 1948. He married at age 14 years in 1937, and
continued his education.
Motiram's interest in the Nepali language
and literature grew more and more, and he started writing for journals. He went
back again to Banaras in the year 1938 for Nepali language and literature. He
then wrote articles and published and edited the magazine 'Gorkha Bharat Life.'
He also printed a Banaras translation of Bhanubhakta's 'Balkanda.'.
Motiram Bhatt contributed significantly to
Nepali literature. He had written various poems and gazals like 'Gajendra
Moksha', 'Prachanda Devotion', and 'Uchacharra'. He collected works of
Bhanubhakta Acharya and played a very important role in establishing Nepali
literature.
Motiram was not just a poet; he was more a
journalist, editor, publisher, physician, critic-investigator, and founder in
the literary field. He established the 'Pashwat Press' in Kathmandu, providing
essential support to the printing and publication of Nepali literature.

Motiram Bhatta's Early Life and Education
Motiram Bhatta was born in 1866 in

The literary efforts of Motiram Bhatta did
not stop at his own writings. He established a literary circle called
"Mitramandali" and later a library in Kathmandu. He started the
publishing of Nepali-language periodicals and books, preserved and popularized
the works of Bhanu bhakta Acharya. Motiram also succeeded in having a printing
press brought to Nepal, which gave an opportunity for other writers to publish
their works, as well as serving as a stimulus for the development of the Nepali
language and literature.

Motiram Bhatta was a dedicated promoter of
Nepalese, a writer, and a poet. He organized several academic discussions on

Motiram Bhatta made Bhanu Bhakta Acharya
famous. Bhánu had translated Ramayan into the language everybody could
understand, and Motirãm published and distributed it in Nepal.
Motiram's interest started when he attended
his friend's wedding and listened to Bhanu Bhakta's Ramayana. With that
influence, he began to learn more about Bhanu Bhakta. This influence brought
the greatest impact on Nepali literature. It was his writings that motivated
Motiram Bhatta and made him a poet, writer, critic, biographer, and publisher.
Motiram Bhatta Advances Nepal's Publishing Industry
Motiram Bhatta improved the printing
industry in Nepal. He, together with his friends, initiated a printing press
that was supposed to be the first private press in Nepal. Indeed, it helped many
Nepali writers and poets to share their works. He even printed a biography on
Bhanu Bhakta entitled Kabi Bhanubhakta Ko Jivan Charitra.
Later, the biography of Motiram Bhatta
showed up as Kabi Motiram Bhattako Sachitra Charitra Barnan and was published
by Nara Dev Pandey.
Motiram Bhatta introduced Nepali ghazals.
He started as a singer and used to love ghazals and folk songs. Motiram wrote
and sang many Nepali ghazals, making them popular. His songs are still loved in
Nepal today.
Besides singing, Motiram learnt music and
sitar from Pannalal - the great player of this instrument in India's Benaras.
His love for music and poetry enriched the cultural scene of Nepal, where it
was distinctly heard above the cacophony of guns.
Motiram Bhatta Linked Nepal to Global Literary Scene
Motiram Bhatta was an important person in
linking up Nepal with the rest of the world through literature. He knew many
languages like Sanskrit, Nepali, Hindi, English, Urdu, and Persian. Bhatta
learned Nepali at a Persian school.
Motiram toiled for Nepali literature for a
continuous 15 years. Within this period, he wrote and edited about 25 books. He
wrote some poems in Hindi and Urdu, but largely, he wrote essays, plays, and
stories in Nepali. Some of the famous works are Manodweg Prawah, Panchak
Prapancha, Shakuntala, Priyadarsika, and Pikdoot.
So good was Motiram's work that Nepali
literature took a sea change. Mitramandali was a group initiated by him wherein
people helped him write and publish books in Nepali. In 1866, he also started a
Nepali magazine, Gorkha Bharat Jeevan.
Motiram Bhatta: Yubakabi
Motiram Bhatta is a superhero in Nepal. He
was the special poet known as Yubakabi_Motiram_Bhatta. Due to the fact that he
did so many great things in Nepali literature, people think he's some kind of
national hero. He wrote a lot of poems and stories from 1883 to 1919, and that
time is even named after him: Motiram Era! They also called him Yuwa Kabi,
which means young poet. He's like the famous writer that helped make Nepal's
writing really awesome!

म तिम्रा अघी पर्न लायक् कहाँ छूम तिम्रा अघी पर्न लायक् कहाँ छू, त्यसैले अघी सर्न लायक् कहाँ छू । हुकुम हुन्छ तिम्रो त हाजिर छँदैछू, बिना मर्जि आँट गर्न लायक् कहाँ छू। अरूका ऊपर आँखिभौँ तानि हाने, म जावो हरे ! मर्न लायक् कहाँ छू। जहाँसम्म मन चल्छ लौ हुन्छ घुर्कुन्, तिनै झैँ नजर् तर्न लायक कहाँ छू। सहडमै छ मन् हर्न सक्नू हरीले, सुनीस् मोति त्यो गर्न लायक् कहाँ छू। |
पयर्मा कडा चोट पायेर आयेपयर्मा कडा चोट पायेर आये म भन्दै थिएँ होस राखेर आये। फजीती तहाँ भित्रको देख्छ जस्ले उती फकँदा कान् समायेर आये । म आउन्न पक्का भनी भन्नु क्यै दिन्, यती दिन् पछि क्या छकाएर आये । न केही भनेको न केही सुनेको बिना कारणै मुख् फुलाएर आये । म मागेर खोस्ने थिएँ मो कहाँ मन् कता जानि त्यो मन् लुकाएर आये । जतिले तहाँ भित्र ता जान पाये त्यतिले दसेक् ठेक खाएर आए । अहा कस्तरी छाती झल्क्यो हरीको जसै मोति माला झुलाये र आये । |

सरकार पो किन चाहियोदुइ आँखिभौँ त तयार छन्, तरबार पो किन चाहियो, तिमी आफु मालिक भैगयौ, सरकार पो किन चाहियो ।।१।। पहरा कडा छ कटाक्षको, हरदम तयार मुहारमा, घर भन्नु भारि महल न हो, दरबार पो किन चाहियो ।।२।। कति चम्किलो छ हँसाइको हिसिमा किरन पनि दाँतको मणि, मोती, नीर जुहार न हो, अरु हार पो किन चाहियो ।।३।। |
