Gopal Paṇḍe, affectionately known by his pen name “Asīm,”
was born on 15 Jestha 1970 BS (May 30, 1913 CE) in Pyāphal, Kathmandu.
He was the son of Līlārāj Paṇḍe and Ṭulkārām Paṇḍe, who
originally hailed from Dang. Though part of a notable Pande family lineage, his
early years were marked by economic hardship, a common theme of struggle
that shaped his character deeply .
In 1980 BS (1923 CE), Gopal joined Darbar High
School in Kathmandu. He completed his matriculation in Patna in 1989 BS
(1932–33 CE). Seeking further education, he enrolled at Tri-Chandra
College in 1990 BS (1933–34 CE), but tragically, his studies were disrupted
when a devastating earthquake struck Nepal in 1990 BS (1934 CE) .
The Teacher Blossoms
Undeterred, Gopal began his teaching career in Asār, 1992
BS (mid‑1935 CE) at Srēṣṭhā Pathshālā. He later returned to Darbar High
School as a teacher. Over a remarkable 41 years of service, he became
known for his simplicity, warmth, and unwavering dedication .
It was during his tenure that he realized the power of
education in one’s native language. Driven by this belief, around 2002 BS
(1945 CE) he began advocating for Nepali-medium entrance exams. By 2008
BS (1951 CE), the Ministry of Education officially approved this system. On
15 Bhadra 2009 BS (September 1, 1952 CE), he founded Nepali Uccha
Shikshālaya adjacent to Darbar High School and became its headmaster .
The Nepali Education Council: A Visionary Leap
Gopal’s dream went beyond classrooms. He envisioned an
institution dedicated to uplifting Nepali language and literature. With
backing from more than **101 scholars—including giants like Rudra Raj Paṇḍe,
Lakshmīprasād Devkota, and Leekhnāth Paudyal—**he founded the Nepali
Education Council.
The Council gained official recognition on 3 Sāun 2008 BS
(July 18, 1951 CE) . From producing curricula, conducting admissions, to
organizing national literary celebrations like Bhanu Jayanti and Mati
Ram Bhatt Jayanti, it became a pillar in reviving Nepali in education .

After passing away on 30 Mangshir 2035 BS (December 15,
1978 CE), Gopal left a powerful legacy continued by his daughter, Rama
Sharma. She has cultivated his vision—maintaining the family home as a

erecting statues of Nepali luminaries in Kathmandu and abroad—even reaching
places like Lhasa for Devkota’s memorial .
His life is celebrated annually on 32 Sāun (August 16)
with the Gopal Paṇḍe Award, honoring contributions to Nepali language
and literature. Notably, Prof. Dr. Shailendu Prakaash Nepal received
this award in 2080 BS (2024–25 CE) .
