Early Days: From Songs to Poetry
Subba’s creative inclinations began with songwriting.
Influenced by the songs he heard in his village, he started expressing his
emotions through music, writing a dozen songs. His talent was acknowledged when
he received an award from Radio Nepal in 2056 BS (1999 AD). However, the
practical challenges of producing songs, such as finding singers, composers,
and funding for recordings, led him to shift his focus to poetry.
As a poet, Subba gained popularity in Nepal’s urban literary
circles. His works resonated deeply with readers, but he felt constrained by
the form. "I couldn’t express everything I wanted through poetry," he
once admitted. This realization led him to explore short stories, which
provided a broader canvas for his ideas.
Rise as a Storyteller
Subba’s transition to storytelling marked a significant
phase in his career. His stories captured the essence of Limbu culture and the
struggles of rural and marginalized communities. His anthology Lato Pahad
became a landmark in Nepali literature, earning him the prestigious Padmashree
Award.
While his short stories garnered acclaim, Subba’s focus
eventually shifted toward screenwriting. He contributed to the scripts of
popular Nepali films like Kabaddi, Tandro, and Purano Dunga.
The Kabaddi series, in particular, showcased his knack for blending
humor with societal themes, making it a blockbuster franchise in Nepali cinema.
Stepping into Direction
After a decade of contributing as a writer, Subba ventured
into film direction. His debut as a director, Jaari, is set to release
soon. The film explores the cultural nuances of the Limbu community,
particularly the Jaari tradition. However, Subba emphasizes that the
movie is not merely about this practice but about the continuity and resilience
of love in different forms.
Subba’s directorial journey was a natural progression.
"I spent years around films—writing scripts, participating in discussions,
and traveling for shoots. Eventually, I felt I could direct too," he
shared.
A Multifaceted Personality
Upendra Subba is known for his witty and humorous writing,
which extends to his real-life persona. Despite his cheerful demeanor, those
close to him can sense the deeper emotions he often hides. Subba acknowledges,
"I can hide my sorrows, but those who know me well can still see through
them."
His journey from being a poet with long dreadlocks—earning
him the nickname "the poet with long hair"—to a celebrated filmmaker
is filled with intriguing anecdotes. Subba’s signature dreadlocks even led to
him playing a shaman in the Kabaddi films. Eventually, he cut his hair
but expressed a desire to grow it long again, inspired by his friend Bipul
Pratik.
Personal Philosophy and Lifestyle
Subba’s personal life reflects his philosophical outlook.
Despite challenges, he insists he has never truly suffered. "As a child, I
was the only son and got my way through stubbornness. As an adult, I didn’t
dream of impossible things like owning cars or fame, so my life has been less
burdened," he explains.
At the age of 30, Subba found inspiration in the teachings
of Osho and J. Krishnamurti, which helped him adopt a detached perspective on
life. Over time, he gave up alcohol and meat—a significant shift for someone
who once indulged in both passionately. "Letting go of attachments is a
great liberation," he reflects.
Legacy and Vision
Subba’s work reflects his commitment to exploring untold
stories from Nepali society. He aims to bring unique narratives to the
forefront, believing that Nepal’s cinema and literature should address its
untouched cultural and social themes.
Whether as a poet, storyteller, or filmmaker, Upendra Subba

विश्वासदेउरालीमा सिन्दुरले रातै पोतिएर फूलपातीले छ्याप्पै छोपिएर एउटा ढुङ्गा देउता भएर बसेको छ। देउता ढुङ्गा पनि हुन सक्छ ढुङ्गा देउता पनि हुन सक्छ मात्र विश्वासमा। त्यही विश्वासमा निर्बलहरु बल माग्दै ढुङ्गासामु माथा टेक्छन् गरिबहरु धन माग्दै ऋण गरी बोका काट्छन् दु:खीहरु सुख माग्दै रुइकराइ भाकल गर्छन् विश्वास यति घाती छ कि! नाथे एउटा ढुङ्गाले पनि यसरी मान्छेको शोषण गर्छ। |
भिकारीमन्दिरको गेटबाहिर एउटा बूढो कुष्ठरोगी थोत्रो बोरा बिछ्याएर माग्न बसेको छ। मन्दिर आउने–जाने एकदुई भक्तजनले चाराना–आठाना फाल्दिन्छन् र भन्छन्– "बाजे, राम्रो आर्शीवाद दिनू है!" यो बूढो कुष्ठरोगी कति धनी छ, हकि? चराना–आठानामा अनमोल आर्शीवाद बेचिराछ। |
छोरी छोरीले मिठाइ माग्न छाडी विरक्तिएको छ मन हिजोआज . उहिले जस्तो रोईकराई, चिच्याई छोरीले मिठाइ मागे हुन्थ्यो - 'पापा एउटा मिठाइ किनिदिनु न!' कसम! आज म रिसाउने थिइन छोरीलाई आँखा सन्काएर तर्साउने थिइन आज मसंग कविता बेचेको केहि पैसा छ छोरीलाई मिठाइ किनिदिने मन पनि छ तर, छोरीले मिठाई माग्न छाडी विरक्तिएको छ मन हिजोआज! आज- छोरीलाई काखमा राखेर रुँदै-रुँदै सोधूँ कि आँफै- 'छोरि मिठाई खाने?' सायद, अब मेरो छोरी ठूली भइन्! |
कसमदेउरालीमा सिन्दुरले रातै पोतिएर फूलपातीले छयाप्पै छोपिएर एउटा ढुंगा देउता भएर बसेको छ देउता ढुंगा हुन् सक्छ/ढुंगा देउता पनि हुन् सक्छ -मात्र विश्वासमा त्यहि विश्वासमा - निर्बलहरु बल माग्दै ढुंगा सामु माथा टेक्छन गरिबहरु धन माग्दै ऋण गरि बोका काटछन दु:खीहरु सुख माग्दै रोइ,कराई भाकल गर्छन .. विश्वास एति घाती छ,कि नाथे एउटा ढुंगाले पनि यसरि मान्छेको शोषण गर्छ |
बाटोम त मेरै बाटो हिँडिरहेको थेँ खोइ? काँबाट आयौ, र तिम्ले मेरो बाटो छेक्यौ नचिन्या मान्छे (?) म त नबोलुँ भन्दै थिएँ कि, तिम्ले सोध्यौ–“यो बाटो काँ जान्छ?” र बोल्न करै लाग्यौ भनेँ–“यो बाटो मेरो आँगनछेउ हुँदै पर प...र जान्छ।” जब, तिमी गयौ– मेरो घर आँगनछेउ भएर गयौ आखिर, मेरो मन मुटु छोएर गयौ। तब, अचानक बेचैनी बढ्यो त्यसै त्यसै– दोबाटो कुरी बस्न मन भएर आयो कतै फेरि, घुमिफिरी यै बाटो भएर आउँछौ कि? पृथ्वी गोलो छ भन्ने लागेर आयो र, सोध्छौ कि फेरि–“यो बाटो काँ जान्छ?” भन्नेथेँ–“यो बाटो मेरो दिलसम्म जान्छ” यस्तै सपना पो जागेर आयो। अब, तिम्रो आँगनसम्म पुग्ने बाटो म कसलाई सोधौँ? |
प्रेमघाम हेर्दा राग देखेँ जून हेर्दा दाग देखेँ तारा हेर्दा टाढा देखेँ फूल हेर्दा काँडा देखेँ मैले सबैमा खोट देखेँ अनि आँखा बन्द गरिहेर्दा गान्धारीलाई देखेँ हजुर ! मलाई गान्धारी औधी मन पर्यो त्यसै-त्यसै अन्धो हुन मन पर्यो । |
सायदअचानक बाटोमा भेटिनु तिमी मुस्कुराउनु सायद, मुस्कुराउनु तिम्रो स्वभाव थियो । बाटोमा खेल्दा- भकुन्डो तिम्रो घरको कम्पाउन्डभित्र छिर्नु भकुन्डो लिन मैं आउनु मुस्कुराउँदै तिम्ले मेरो हातमा दिनु सायद, असल छिमेकी हुनु मात्र थियो । बार्दलीमा फुलेका फूलहरुमाझ बसेर घामको न्यानो ताप्दै हरेक बिहान तिम्ले कपाल कोर्नु वर, झ्यालको चौकसमा बसेर गितार बजाउँदै मैले गीत गाउनु सायद, हाम्रो नित्यकर्म मात्र थियो । बिजुलीको खम्बानेर खम्बै भएर मैले हरेक दिन उभिनु हरेक दिन तिमी ढिलो आउनु मुस्कुराउँदै कान समाएर तिम्ले माफी माग्नु कलेज ढिलो हुने बहाना बनाएर मैले बाइक हुइँक्याउनु तिमी डराएर मसँग लिपिक्क टाँसिनु सायद, मेरै नियत मात्र खराब थियो । फुरुरु उड्दै दुई पंक्षी, नौ डाँडा काटी जाऊँ कान्छी माकुरी मायाजाल बुन्छ, भन्देऊ न कान्छी लौ हुन्छ हरदिन/हरसाँझ मैले यही गीत गाउनु मेरो कुममा टाउको बिसाएर, मायालु भएर ‘परीक्षापछि ल’ तिम्ले भन्नु तिम्रो परीक्षा नसकीकनै तिम्रो फुपूको छोरो पल्टनबाट छुट्टी आउनु मेरो कोठामा आएर तिमी बेसरी रुनु सायद, तिम्रो सफल अभिनय मात्र थियो । |
साँल्दीज्यू! अर्को एक ट्वाँक थपूँ कि?कसो बाटो भुलेर म फेरि यहाँ, भट्टीछेउ आइपुगेँ। अब, सिधा वा बाङ्गो गरी जसो-जस्तो गरी भएर यहाँ आइपुगेपछि नआउनुथ्यो, आइसकेर भित्रै आइसकेपछि साँल्दीज्यू! एक ट्वाँक चढाऊँ कि? अस्ति पोरैदेखिन् छोडूँ त भनेको खोई परार पनि त्यसै भनियो र, रक्सीको बदनाम मात्तै गरियो त्यो साल त मलाई पनि खुबै लाज भाथ्यो र त आजकाल सर्माउँदै पिउँछु लुकिछिपी पिउँछु तर पनि- कहिलेकाहीँ त नपिऊँ भन्छु साथीभाइ तर्सिदै रिसाउँछन् र, छेवैमा पिँध मात्र फर्काएर ‘यो त बिग्रियो' पो भन्छन् यो महान् यात्रा कहिले कहाँबाट शुरु भयो? यकिन साल सम्वत् थाहा नभए पनि परपरसम्म सम्झिल्याउँदा चोथ्रोघारी हुँदै सिरुबारीसम्म ढुल्मुलढुल्मुल धमिलो सम्झना आउँछ बेस्सरी मुटु दुखेको निहुँ अमिलो सम्झना आउँछ यतिमात्र सम्झना छ हेर्दाहेर्दै झ्याप्प घाम निभेको हो म घाम पर्खेर वर्षौ सुतिरहे अचेत अवस्थामा मेरो आमाले बुढासुब्बालाई एक बोतल रक्सी चढाउनुभएछ र पो म ब्युझेँ म बिम्झिँदा घाम फेरि अस्ताउन लागेको थियो छोड्दिऊँ यस्ता झ्याउ कुरा साँल्दीज्यू! अर्को एक ट्वाँक थपूँ कि? ‘खाऊँ’ भन्छन् कोही आफन्त, खानै पर्यो ‘नखाऊ है’ भन्छन् आफ्ना मान्छे ‘भोलिदेखि खान्नँ’ भन्नैपर्यो यसरी दोहोरो बाँच्दा दुवैथरी आफन्तका मन राखिदिऊँभन्दा आफ्नै मन पो ढाँटिँदो र’छ आफ्नै मन पो छलिदो र’छ तर, यो नाथे मनलाई के छ र! कुनै रुखको ठुटामा थपक्क राखे नि भो चकमक-झुल्लासँगै बट्टामा कच्याक्कुचुक पारे नि भो यो मन पनि म नै जस्तो आजित भा’छ जित्ने उत्साह हराएपछि हार्न त झनै सजिलो र’छ हिजो मात्तै- भोलि रक्सी छोड्ने सर्तमा रक्सी नै पिएँ आखिर, यो अन्तिम हो भनी बेस्सरी पिएँ आज कसो बाटो भुलेर फेरि यहाँ, भट्टीछेउ म आइपुगेँ नआउनुथ्यो आइसकेर भित्रै आइसकेपछि नपिउनुथ्यो पिइसकेर यति मातिसकेपछि साँल्दीज्यू! अब अन्ति ट्वाँक थपु कि? |
