Kedarman Byathit was not just a poet. He was a fighter, a
leader, and a true son of Nepal. Born in a time when voices were silenced and
freedom was rare, he stood up not only with his words but also with his
actions. He believed in justice, freedom, and the power of literature to bring
change. This is the story of a man who inspired generations with his courage
and creativity.
Early Life and Struggles
Kedarman Byathit was born in 1971 B.S. (1914 A.D.) in
a village called Bansbari in Sindhupalchok, Nepal. His parents
were Suryaman Shrestha and Padmakumari Shrestha. Due to family
reasons, he was sent to his maternal home in Syangja during childhood,
and later, he moved to Kathmandu when he was just four years old.
Even though he only studied up to third grade, he
became such a strong and respected writer that many people wrote research
papers on him, including a PhD thesis by Dr. Mridula Sharma. This proves
that education alone doesn’t decide someone’s greatness.
From Clerk to Creator
Byathit's first job was as a clerk in a timber warehouse,
but his life changed forever after he married Jyotsna Pradhan, the
daughter of Chakrasundar and Shivmaya Pradhan. He was just 18 at the time. The
couple had six sons and four daughters. He once said, “Some of my sons
were good, and some were not, but all my daughters turned out to be wonderful.”
Even though he was a family man, his heart always beat for
Nepal and its people. He was passionate about freedom and human rights,
which led him to speak out during the Rana regime, a time when Nepali
citizens had no voice.
Fighting the Ranas and Facing Jail
Byathit was a firm believer in democracy and civil rights.
He co-founded the Nepali Citizens’ Rights Committee along with Shukraraj
Shastri, becoming its secretary while Shastri was the president. This
caught the attention of the Ranas, the rulers of the time, who considered him a
threat.
In 1997 B.S., Byathit was arrested and sentenced to 18
years in prison with a public announcement stating he was an "enemy of
the state." Despite the tough conditions, he didn't lose hope. In fact,
poet Siddhicharan Shrestha, who was also in jail, helped shape Byathit
into a powerful poet. Jail became his classroom, and his words became sharper.
He even went on a 21-day hunger strike to protest
against the terrible jail conditions. Although he didn't complete his goal of a
hunger strike till death, his efforts led to prison reforms. Eventually, the
Ranas kicked him out of jail to avoid further trouble.
Continuing the Fight Outside Prison
Once free, Byathit didn’t stay silent. He joined the Nepali
National Congress, the main party fighting for democracy at the time. He
became a member of its Central Struggle Committee.
Later, he was accused of being involved in a shooting
incident in Rautahat and was arrested by Indian police at the request of the
Rana rulers. But thanks to B.P. Koirala and his request to Jawaharlal
Nehru, the Prime Minister of India, Byathit was not sent back to Nepal. He
spent 18 months in Bihar jail before finally being released when
democracy arrived in Nepal.
Political Career and Positions
After the fall of the Rana regime, Byathit continued his
political journey. He even formed a new leftist congress party, but it
didn’t grow as much as expected.
He was trusted by many kings. King Tribhuvan
appointed him as a member of the advisory council, and later, King
Mahendra made him assistant minister. Due to his good work, he was
promoted to minister. He also served under King Birendra and held
positions of great respect.
The Poet Above All
Even though he was active in politics, Byathit's heart
always belonged to literature. His writing was so powerful that it often
outshined his political work. He was recognized as a people’s poet or “Rajkavi”
(Royal Poet) by the well-known Nai Publication.
He often said, “Politics is like a toilet, but literature
is like a dining hall.” This shows how deeply he respected the power of
writing. He believed literature could feed the soul, while politics was just a
necessary chore.
Building Literary Organizations
Byathit helped build Nepal’s literary world. He was a key
figure in forming the Nepali Sahitya Parishad (Literary Council) in 2003
B.S., and organized a three-day literary conference, where Mahakavi
Laxmi Prasad Devkota was the chair.
He was also one of the founders of the Kavya Pratishthan
(Poetry Foundation) in 2013 B.S. Later, in 2019 B.S., along
with Hrishikesh Shah, he co-founded the Nepali Literature Institute,
where he became the president two years later.
Leading National Literary Events
Byathit led many national-level literary events.
Under his leadership, major literary conferences were held in different parts
of Nepal:
- Kathmandu
in 2019 B.S.
- Chitwan
in 2022 B.S.
- Jhapa
in 2023 B.S.
- Dhangadhi
in 2026 B.S.
- Biratnagar
in 2028 B.S.
He was a literary warrior who fought for Nepali language and
literature from every corner of the country.
Health Struggles and Hard Times
Later in life, Byathit was hit by tuberculosis, and
his health began to decline. He was also struggling financially. At this
difficult time, Bhagwan Sahay, the Indian ambassador to Nepal and a
fellow writer, took him to Bhopal Sanatorium in India for treatment. He
credited Sahay with saving his life, saying, “A true artist can save lives, and
that’s why I’m still alive.”
A Life of Words and Awards
Byathit never stopped writing. He wrote in Nepali,
Newari, and Hindi. He published more than a dozen books in Nepali
and four each in Newari and Hindi. His poems, essays, and stories were
widely respected.
For his incredible contribution, he received several honors,
including:
- Gorkha
Dakshin Bahu First Class
- Trishakti
Patta First Class
- Prithvi
Pragya Award
- Shrestha
Shirpa Award
- Vedanidhi
Award
- Jagadamba
Shri Award
- Sitaram
Award
He was also honored in many parts of Nepal and India.
A Sad Ending
Despite everything he gave to the country, Byathit’s final
years were full of pain. He suffered emotionally and often cried alone. His
life ended tragically when he fell in the bathroom of Nepal Academy,
where he had gone to attend a literary program. It was a heartbreaking end for
someone who had done so much for literature and the nation.
Legacy of Kedarman Byathit
Kedarman Byathit left behind a legacy that still inspires us
today. He was a man who lived many lives in one—an activist, a leader, a
minister, a father, and above all, a poet of the people.
His story reminds us that no matter how small your
beginnings are, your voice can shake mountains. He spoke for the people when it
was dangerous to do so. He fought with words and actions. And even when the
world tried to silence him, he roared like a lion.
His life teaches us one important thing: True strength
comes from standing up for what's right, even when it's hard.
