Famous poems of Kshetra Pratap Adhikari

Kshetra Pratap Adhikari (1999–2070 B.S.) was a multi-talented Nepali poet, lyricist, and writer. He was not just a man of words, but someone whose songs touched millions of hearts across Nepal. While many knew him for his beautiful lyrics, very few knew how far he had come in life—from working as a low-paid mail peon to becoming the chairman of Sajha Publications and even serving as Assistant Minister of Education during the Panchayat era.

    Early Life and Family

Kshetra Pratap Adhikari was born in Chaitra 1999 B.S. in a small village called Jyamruk Bayapani, located in Mirlung VDC of Tanahun district, Nepal. He was the youngest child of his parents, Gajkeshar Adhikari and Janak Kumari Adhikari.

From a very young age, he showed a talent for music and writing. His voice was sweet, and he had a special love for expressing emotions through poems and songs. Later in life, he got married to Shanta Adhikari in 2023 B.S. and had two sons—Ajar Adhikari and Aman Adhikari.

    Education Journey

Adhikari started his education when he was just 7 years old, learning the Devanagari script (Nepali alphabet). At the age of 12, he began learning English alphabets in Shanti Primary School, located in Kavazit, Mirlung.

At age 15, he made a big decision. He walked for four days on foot from his village to Kathmandu to continue his education. There, he enrolled in the night classes at Yuddhodaya Secondary School. Life was not easy, but he kept moving forward. Finally, at the age of 19, he passed his School Leaving Certificate (SLC) in 2018 B.S.

Despite financial struggles, he continued his education and eventually completed a Master’s Degree (M.A.) in Economics from Sophia University in Japan, where he stayed for two years teaching Nepali to Japanese people before they visited Nepal.

His deep interest in languages helped him become fluent in Nepali, English, Japanese, and Hindi. These skills later played a big role in his writing and public service career.

    Struggles in Kathmandu

Life in Kathmandu was full of challenges. To support himself, Kshetra Pratap took up different jobs. His first job was as a peon in the postal department, earning just 30 rupees per month. Later, in 2024 B.S., he became a conductor in Sajha Yatayat, a public bus service.

There were times he struggled to even manage his Dashain expenses. In those days, he used to sing poems at Shobha Bhagwati temple and sell poem pamphlets just to earn some money. This shows how passionate he was about writing—even when he had almost nothing, he found ways to keep writing and sharing his words.

Rise in Sajha and Leadership Roles

He didn’t stay at the bottom for long. Slowly, he climbed up the ladder. From being a conductor, he became Secretary of the Sajha Cooperative and eventually Chairman of Sajha Publications.

His hard work was recognized by many. In 2031 B.S., after returning from Japan, he was appointed as Member Secretary of Sajha Central Organization by King Birendra.

Later, he worked closely with respected literary figures like Bhimnidhi Tiwari and Kamal Dixit. He eventually rose to the position of Manager, then Chairman, and worked with Krishna Chandra Singh Pradhan who served as General Manager.

During their time, Sajha Publications reached new heights. Because Kshetra Pratap came from a humble background, he understood the pain and challenges of ordinary workers. But he could also deal with high-ranking officials smartly. People used to jokingly call him “Chiplomate” (a playful version of 'diplomat') because of how smoothly he handled all kinds of people.

    Political Involvement and Views

Kshetra Pratap Adhikari was also involved in politics during the Panchayat era, where he served as an Assistant Minister for Education. He was considered close to the monarchy and supported the system at that time. In one instance, he even proposed making King Birendra the patron of the literary society, which surprised many people.

He also wrote a song titled “Chautarima Raja Bhetiyo, Chautarima Rani Bhetiyo” to please the royal family. This song was so popular that Radio Nepal played it repeatedly, and people began singing it everywhere. Some even joked, saying “Chautarima Kshetra Pratap Bhetiyo” when they saw him.

    Famous Songs and Lyrics

Though he held high positions in institutions, Kshetra Pratap Adhikari is best remembered for his songs and poems. His lyrics became part of everyday life in Nepal, thanks to powerful singers like Narayan Gopal, Gopal Yonzon, Kunti Moktan, and Ram Krishna Dhakal.

Here are some of his most loved songs:

    • “Ma Ta Laligurans Bhaechhu…” sung by Narayan Gopal
    • “Malai Chhodi Mero Chhaya…” also by Narayan Gopal
    • “Shanti Bhanda Para Arko Bhetnuparne Buddha Chhaina…” sung by Gopal Yonzon
    • “Gothalo Jada…” sung by Kunti Moktan
    • “Jindagima Dherai Kura Garn Baki Chha…” by Ram Krishna Dhakal

These songs were not just hits—they became part of the emotional landscape of the country.

    Books and Poetry Collections

Kshetra Pratap wasn’t just a songwriter—he was a serious poet too. He published several poetry collections over the years. His poems often reflected love for nature, village life, patriotism, and the real pain of people living in rural Nepal. His style was simple, emotional, and deeply connected to the soil of Nepal.

Here are some of his well-known books:

    1. Rahar Lagera (2024 B.S.)
    2. Gambesika Geet (2034 B.S.)
    3. Pahad Dekhi Pahad Samma (2043 B.S.)
    4. Ma Ta Laligurans Bhaechhu
    5. Na Phulekā Phoolharu (2053 B.S.)
    6. Feri Euta Parivartan (2055 B.S.)
    7. Tara Desh Haari Rahechha (2057 B.S.)
    8. Akkabita (2058 B.S.)
    9. Yuddha ra Chhaya (2064 B.S.)

His book “Gambesika Geet” became especially popular as it expressed the feelings of villagers in poetic form.

    Style and Themes

Kshetra Pratap Adhikari had a unique writing style. He preferred writing in the natural tone of ordinary people. His poems felt like songs sung in the fields, at the riverside, or during village festivals.

He took inspiration from the daily lives of rural people—their joys, their struggles, and their dreams. He believed that poetry and songs should connect with the soul, not just impress the mind.

    Legacy and Final Days

Even in his final years, Adhikari remained dedicated to literature and public service. He didn’t chase fame or power—he let his work speak for itself. People who knew him personally say that he was always humble, always warm, and always ready to support young writers and artists.

Kshetra Pratap Adhikari passed away in 2070 B.S. But his words live on. His poems are still taught, his songs are still sung, and his story continues to inspire new generations of Nepali writers and musicians.

    Conclusion

Kshetra Pratap Adhikari’s life was a story of determination, creativity, and service. From walking barefoot to Kathmandu as a teenager to becoming one of Nepal’s most respected poets and lyricists, he proved that passion and patience can lead to greatness.

He might not have been born into luxury, but he left behind a rich legacy of literature and music. His life reminds us that even in the toughest times, a dream held close to the heart can bloom—just like the laligurans (rhododendron) flowers he once wrote about.
