Basanta Shrestha is one of the popular Nepali diaspora writers,
born on February 15, 1956 (Falgun 4, 2012 B. S. ) in Myanglung Bazaar,
Tehrathum in the occasion of Basanta Panchami. He wrote as a child and his
literary activity might be dated back to his early years of life. Despite his
young age, he had a knack for literature, and that can be assessed from the
various poems and articles he used to write in his tender age, which were
finding their ways into Nepali magazines. Shrestha has been actively engaged in
different literary and social societies as a writer and editor of different
literary journals. His active participation in the literature of Nepali
migrants has given him a prominent place in the global Nepali writers'
association, especially in North America.
Tehrathum Narayanman Shrestha, the founder and first principal, is
known as M. N. Sir and is popular among the people of Tehrathum. Narayanman was
an enthusiastic teacher and great personality who worked hard for the
upliftment of education in the area. His mother, Subhadra Shrestha, always gave
him his personal space during his young years and gave him the opportunity to
pursue education and masterpieces. From his father's side, Basanta had the
spirit of community service and never left any stone unturned in education as
he was the elder son. Later in 1995, he moved to the United States of America;
that was a big step in his life. As far as Basanta Shrestha is concerned, he
may have been far away from his homeland, but he was in touch with the literary
activities of his society. During his stay in the U.S., his need has been
relentless to carry Nepali literature to new heights.
Diaspora Contributions and Leadership
Basanta Shrestha is one of those writers who have contributed much
to Nepali diaspora literature. He is the 'president' of North American Nepali
Literature Foundation (NANLF)-a body he.us actively involved in the promotion
of Nepali literature amongst Nepali people living in North America. His
leadership has been very instrumental in organizing literary activity and
nurturing writers who are in Nepali community living in foreign countries.
Shrestha was not only enriching the literary scenario of North America;
actually, it had been possible to link the writers and poets of Nepal with the
Nepali people all over the world.
Actually, his contact with International Nepali Literature
Society, INLS, came as soon as he landed in United States of America. Within
four years, he became the president of INLS, where he extended lots of
assistance to literary actions in North America. His reign marked a neater and
busier literary direction in the diaspora; there are many literary occasions,
workshops, and publications which were initiated or took place during his reign
and enriched the Nepali literary texture outside the country.
Literary Career and Achievements
Basanta Shrestha Literary Efforts span over four decades. He was
already writing poems when he was in his teens, and by 1966, while in his
twenties, he was editing a handmade magazine. He has contributed his works in
many Nepal's interlocutors and Nepalese literary journals as well as some
international journals, too. This great artist and novelist has been awarded several
awards, though the appreciation of his literary work has come in many colors in
the recent past. He also judged several literary competitions all over the
country as well as overseas.
During 2008, he has also published some of his poems in a poetry
book entitled 'Basanta Shrestha Ka Kavita'. It is considered one of the

also been instrumental in the unification of Nepali writers from different

poetry competitions with handsome prizes created a sense of reading among
Nepali people in North America. The foundation under Shrestha also hopes to
bring out excellent literary pieces and hopes to work toward translating Nepali
literature to English for better international distribution.

Apart from his literary contribution, Basanta Shrestha is also
famous for his social service. His work is not only connected with literature
but also with social and cultural activities of Nepali people in North America,
dedicated for the maintenance of the Nepali culture. He has been working as a
social activist, and his dedication and love for social service run in his
veins as he learned the same from his father, Narayanman Shrestha.
Besides, Shrestha has been involved a number of times in cultural
shows, festivals and other social activities representing the Nepali culture
and tradition in the United States. In his view, relentless efforts at
preserving Nepali culture and tradition in diaspora context earn him
respectability within the Nepali community. The efforts of Kabir Das, who acted
as a cultural diplomatic of Nepali culture and richness of Nepali literature and
heritage to foreign countries, will influence the younger generation of Nepali
Americans in a positive way.

Coming from a humble background, Shrestha has carved his niche as
a writer, as an editor, and more importantly as a leader in the Nepali
literature field. Some of his contributions are: His contribution to the
diaspora literature, especially in North America, helped lay a foundation for
the identity of a literary market that is still growing. Besides that, his
contribution to establishing North American Nepali Literature Foundation and
promoting Nepali literature and literary events, competition, and publications
indomitably helped the legacy of Nepali literature survive.
More promotion is needed in Nepali literature, and for this
Shrestha has planned to publish more translations in Nepali into English and
other languages in the future. His vision of a Literary talent Competition and
awards for Nepali literature is part of his vision to continue keeping the
light of Nepali literature alight at home and on an international platform.
