Basanta Shrestha is one of the popular Nepali diaspora writers, born on February 15, 1956 (Falgun 4, 2012 B. S. ) in Myanglung Bazaar, Tehrathum in the occasion of Basanta Panchami. He wrote as a child and his literary activity might be dated back to his early years of life. Despite his young age, he had a knack for literature, and that can be assessed from the various poems and articles he used to write in his tender age, which were finding their ways into Nepali magazines. Shrestha has been actively engaged in different literary and social societies as a writer and editor of different literary journals. His active participation in the literature of Nepali migrants has given him a prominent place in the global Nepali writers' association, especially in North America.

He is the 'president' of North American Nepali Literature Foundation (NANLF)-a body he.us actively involved in the promotion of Nepali literature amongst Nepali people living in North America.     Besides, Shrestha has been involved a number of times in cultural shows, festivals and other social activities representing the Nepali culture and tradition in the United States. In his view, relentless efforts at preserving Nepali culture and tradition in diaspora context earn him respectability within the Nepali community. The efforts of Kabir Das, who acted as a cultural diplomatic of Nepali culture and richness of Nepali literature and heritage to foreign countries, will influence the younger generation of Nepali Americans in a positive way.

    Coming from a humble background, Shrestha has carved his niche as a writer, as an editor, and more importantly as a leader in the Nepali literature field. Some of his contributions are: His contribution to the diaspora literature, especially in North America, helped lay a foundation for the identity of a literary market that is still growing. Besides that, his contribution to establishing North American Nepali Literature Foundation and promoting Nepali literature and literary events, competition, and publications indomitably helped the legacy of Nepali literature survive.

    More promotion is needed in Nepali literature, and for this Shrestha has planned to publish more translations in Nepali into English and other languages in the future. His vision of a Literary talent Competition and awards for Nepali literature is part of his vision to continue keeping the light of Nepali literature alight at home and on an international platform.

    अग्रगामी बन्न सकौं !

    आँ गर्दा अलंकार बुझ्ने अति चतुर हामी

    जुँगा चल्दा कुरा बुझ्ने अति बुझक्की हामी

    हल्ला र "रे" को भरमा निर्णय गर्ने हामी

    सत्य र तथ्यको अंकगणित नगर्ने हामी

    आदेश, उपदेश र गाली क्षणमै दिने हामी

    सम्मान र ताली निमेषमै दिने हामी

    के हामी सोच्न नसक्ने भएका हौँ र ?

    गैर नाफा संस्था बाट नाफा खोज्ने हामी

    कुनै ज्ञान बिना ज्ञानी बन्न सक्ने हामी

    अध्ययन बिना नै ज्ञान बाड्न सक्ने हामी

    भ्रष्टाचारी बनेर इमान्दारीताको ब्याख्या गर्ने हामी

    कसैले नगरे आफ्नै संस्था बाट पुरस्कृत बन्ने हामी

    अल्पज्ञानले नै बुद्धको झैं आसिर्बचन दिन खोज्ने हामी

    श्रोता नभए पनि ठुल ठुला भाषण ठोक्ने हामी

    के हामी अल्पज्ञानी बनेका हौँ ?

    के हामी फगत अहंको भण्डार हौ ?

    के हामी फगत हल्लाका कृषक हौँ ?

    सिन्को नभाच्ने अरुको खोट देख्ने हामी

    निर्माण र बिनासमा फरक नदेख्ने हामी

    योजना र कार्यान्वयनमा भेद नबुझ्ने हामी

    पहिलो हुने दौडमा हल्ला बोल्ने हामी

    निर्माण नगरी बिनिर्माण गर्ने हामी

    हल्ला गर्दै समस्या बल्झाउने हामी

    उपदेश र आदेशमात्र दिन सक्ने हामी

    राष्ट्रबादको नाममा खोक्रोबाद बोक्ने हामी

    के हामी बिना सोचका व्यक्ति मात्र हौँ ?

    राष्ट्रियताको नाममा अराष्ट्रिय बन्ने हामी

    स्वाधिनताको नारा लाउदै पराधीनता स्वीकार्ने हामी

    स्वतन्त्र स्वबलंबन खोज्दै परतन्त्र स्वीकार्ने हामी

    प्रबासमा पनि पुरानै ब्यबहार र ब्यबश्थामा चल्ने हामी

    गीत संगीतको झंकारभित्र 
    नारायण गोपाल, अम्बर गुरुङ र दीपका आवाजहरु 
    थुप्रिएका हिउँका पहाडहरुभित्र 
    तीनजुरे र फुलचोकी डाँडाका यादहरु 
    सहर भित्रका बजार र मल हरुभित्र 
    ठमेल र झोंछेका गल्लीहरु ।

    कस्तरी परदेशमा यादहरुलाई 
    बिगतका यादहरुले 
    पत्रै पत्रै बनेर थिचेर राखेका छन् 
    सफा संगमर्मरको
    शिलालेखमा कुंदिएझैं 
    बर्षौं बर्ष पनि पारदर्शीझैं बनेर  
    यादहरु कस्तरी नामेट बनेर 
    बिर्सनै नसकिने भएर बसेछ ।

    मेरो गाउँ, बजार, शहर र मान्छे 
    मेरो आँखामा 
    यहाँ परदेशमा !!!
